Jayden Bonsu Commits To Ohio State

BOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM

After looking like a possible Miami lock just one month ago, Jayden Bonsu has committed to Ryan Day and the Buckeyes. It is no secret that Ohio State was pursuing Caleb Downs to finish out the Safety position for 2023, but when he chose the Crimson Tide over the Buckeyes, everything was dialed to 11 in Bonsu's recruitment. The staff knew they had to get him, as he is one of the best safety prospects left on the board, and they did just that. Bonsu brings the perfect body type and play style to excel at the Bandit position in the Jim Knowles defense, and his work ethic should prove to be impressive once he gets to campus.

The addition of Bonsu gives the Buckeyes a composite team score of 283.89 on 247sports, and keeps them in the #4 spot in the Team Rankings behind Notre Dame, Texas, and Alabama.

With Bonsu in the class, the 2023 DB haul looks like this:

Calvin Simpson-Hunt: 0.9462 #118 Nat. / #14 CB

Malik Hartford: 0.9326 #164 Nat. / #9 S

Kayin Lee: 0.9277 #178 Nat. / #21 CB

Jermaine Mathews: 0.9175 #226 Nat. / #14 ATH

Cedrick Hawkins: 0.9142 #243 Nat. / #17 S

Jayden Bonsu: 0.9099 #259 Nat. / #22 S

For a first year staff in Columbus in the DB room, this is a great haul, especially with how badly we need to get some depth with players that will be departing after this season. Whether or not the Buckeyes are done adding DBs to the 2023 class remains to be seen, as Dijon Johnson has flirted with possibly coming back to the class. That is something to watch as we go forward towards signing day, as I am sure the staff would accept his commitment once he is able to assure them that he is shutting his recruitment down for good.

With the defensive backs being wrapped up for the most part by the time the season starts, it will allow the staff to put a full court press on for remaining defensive prospects they want once the season starts such as Keon Keeley, Matayo Uiagalelei, Desmond Umeozulu, etc. I wouldn't sleep on a possible flip of Tackett Curtis either, as the season plays out and Alex Grinch and Lincoln Riley's defense continues to show it still lacks competence.

The staff needed some wins, and this was a huge one today. Momentum appears to be back for the Bucks as they roll into the season opener on September 3rd, which may be one of the biggest recruiting events in the past decade.
